Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
