Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
