Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
