Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
